How to Manage Stress and its Dangerous Effects? – Part II

We saw in my second blog “How to Manage Stress & its ill effect – Part I”, Stress is an inability to adapt to a changing environment and we discussed the #1 step, the first and foremost step to be more adaptive to change, and to manage your distress is by taking the time and effort to find out your authentic self, your highest values / highest priorities / most important thing you are committed to and dedicated to in your life.
The next step, #2 is living aligned to that primary objective or chief aim or life purpose, to have a more inspiring and balanced life with meaning, wellness and fulfilment.
So, the second step is Live by priority, by your highest values, the most important things in your life you are committed to and dedicated to.
Ask yourself daily, what is the highest priority action or actions I can take today to fulfil that mission, that primary objective? and keep filling your day with the highest priority / most important actions to fulfil your life purpose / swadharma? A Sachin Tendulkar whose highest value / highest priority is Cricket, fills his everyday with actions aligned to it which are practicing cricket or playing cricket matches. That helped him to live an objective, mindful and balanced life where he unleashed his infinite potential and brought out the legend in him. Similarly fill your day with high priority actions aligned to your highest values, your highest priorities, your mission, to unleash your potential and live a balanced, mindful and meaningful life with wellness, fulfilment and life-leadership.
When you live by your highest priorities / highest values, you activate your Telos, the Executive Centre in the forebrain which enables Self-Governance and you would have high levels of discipline, you are reliable, you are focussed, you are ordered and organised, you are resilient, you are adaptable, you have patience, your are efficient, your productivity goes up, your results improve, your self-confidence increases, your self-worth improves, you are self-motivated from within and you wake up your life-leadership.
“Any area of your life that you do not self-govern, is an area which others with over-rule you and govern you” (and that might cause stress)
So, the most important aspect of living aligned to your highest values is, it makes you spontaneously inspired from within (self-motivated from within), it makes you energised, enthusiastic, balanced, objective, mindful and live a meaningful life with holistic wellness (wellness in all areas of life) and fulfilment.
As we discussed in the previous blog, anytime you are not living by your authentic self or highest values you are automatically going to go into distress because blood, oxygen and glucose flows to the hind brain or Amygdala or the lower mind which is driven emotionally by impulses and instincts causing subjective biases and self-governance goes for a toss causing the chemical secretions in the body to get erratic, causing mood swings due to an imbalance between the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS), thereby
perturbing the homeostasis in the body causing “illness”.
Living by your highest priority, by your highest value, is therefore the key for unleashing your infinite potential. So, find that one thing you would like to dedicate your life and fill your day with the highest priority actions aligned to that you are committed to manage your distress and have a more inspiring life.
The next step, Step #3 is “Delegate low priorities”:
There is no way you can live a stress free (distress free) life without delegating the lower priority actions. Anytime you are doing things because you feel like you have to do it, got to do it, must do it, should do it, supposed to do it, etc. you are not living your authentic life by your highest values and instead you are living a compulsive (inauthentic) life based on injected values from others, others priorities, others expectations and you are trapping yourself in time and not liberating yourself to do the “High Priority” things that produce the most result and make a contribution on planet Earth.
So, delegate low priority things to people who are qualified and inspired spontaneously to do that you want to delegate to them. So, delegate things (actions) that are not highest on your priority to those who are inspired to do it and for whom those are a highest priority, so that you can get on to your highest priority actions and give yourself permission to liberate yourself from your lowest priorities and lift yourself up, grow and evolve and make a contribution that is meaningful to you which gives you wellness and fulfilment.
Dr John Demartini fills his life only with his highest priority actions which are “Researching, Writing and Teaching” and has delegated rest all to other people who are inspired to do it. This way he has liberated himself to focus on his highest priority actions which has been the prime reason for his massive growth, development and contribution on planet Earth. Similarly, I fill my life with learning and personal development and consulting clients and delegate by and large rest of the things to those who are inspired to do it.
So, the bottom-line is, “If you fill your life with high priority actions that inspire you liberate yourself from a lot of distractions (low priority things) that cause distress and derail your progress, growth and development.”
A lot of low priority things we do in life, we need not do them ourselves, we can instead delegate it to others by hiring or outsourcing it to someone who is inspired to do it so that we can focus on the best use of our time, on high priority things.
All you have to do is go and do something meaningful to you that serves ever greater numbers of people, earn greater income as a fair exchange and all of a sudden you can surround yourself with people to whom you can delegate all the other low priority stuff. But if you don’t care enough about humanity to serve people, there is no enough income and there is no delegation and you are trapped and that’s self-imposed and no outside things is stopping you from doing something extra-ordinary. It’s simply you who may not be willing to clarify what you are committed and dedicated to, not finding what is your highest value / life purpose / mission / swadharma, not taking the time to find your highest priority actions and delegate the low priority stuff.
So, prioritise your life and watch your distress levels go down, you won’t feel drained and instead value yourself more.
